Shared ColdFusion Hosting… who do you use?

So I have been very fortunate (or unfortunate at times) to have dedicated servers and rackspace for most of my CF projects over the last 8 years. I have had a couple of people ask for my recommendations for CF Hosting and I really have no idea who to recommend. I hear blazing wonderful reviews about hostmysite.com and then I hear that they are down all the time and have crappy service from someone else whom I respect greatly.

So who do you use for shared hosting? VPS Hosting? et al.

I have tried a few of the cheaper ones over the years, and I can tell you that you’re probably going to get what you pay for. Stay the HELL away from Shared CF hosting at HostingAtoZ.com (servers are way overloaded; takes 50+ seconds to load model-glue! [aside: great price for SQL Server access though!])… and although HostExcellence.com has decent enough pricing and decent support, they were still on CF5 last time I checked, which was maybe 6 months ago at most.

http://www.rabidgadfly.com/?p=41 Is a decent place to start looking.

I’ve used several over the years, and I finally settled on CrystalTech (http://www.crystaltech.com/). They are a bit more, and they charge up the wang for additional memory, but the reliability factor if what I’m looking for. I host about 20 clients and they have never once complained about speed or accessibility. I used HostMySite.com before this, and their tech support was PHENOMENAL but their servers reliability took a nosedive after they installed their CF server monitoring software (it’s actually a good piece of software, but they must have mucked something up when installing because after that they tanked) – However they would never reimburse me for my downtime, so I took my 20 clients and moved on. Just my 2 cents.

there are a few ppl that complain about hms but they are a small percent, everyone loves them.

You can look at blogs by some of the cf big & mighty and they all say
“hosted by HostMySite”.. thats got to tell you something, especially when the actual adobe cf team is hosting there.

I agree with the other guy though.. you get what you pay for with shared hosting it isn’t much.

I’ve had good luck with hostmysite.com. Occasionally I want a DNS change or something that isn’t working right in the control panel and they respond to my tickets with fixes within an hour or less.

In terms of getting what you pay for…Godaddy.com has really cheap CF7 hosting (<$10US/month). However, it is only CF7 (though the logo on the website is for CF8) and seems to be a constant source of frustration.

I use http://www.viux.com. They are reasonably cheap and have been an excellent host for me for about 3 years.

My HMS experience was similar to Pat. Very good customer service. Miserable uptime. They were very willing to move my apps to a “more stable” server, but the result was the same…customer goes to site, site is down, customer calls me and is not happy.

I’m actually still looking and in a temporary situation. I’ve thought about a VPS solution with somebody like 1and1.com. I hosted PHP stuff with them before and had a very good experience. It really makes open source Railo an interesting alternative.

We’ve hosted quite a few sites with CrystalTech and always had a great experience. They offer a great amount of control and always pick up the phone anytime day or night. They will also try to respond intelligently to any issue that occurs rather than shove you off like many hosting companies.

I use http://www.viviotech.net for my linux VPS boxes. They have great customer service, and their service is reliable.

I have been using KickAssVPS.com for my shared hosting, and I ave recently upgraded to their VPS. I have been very happy with both. Good uptime, great service, and awesome rates.

I used to use HMS for both PHP & CF Hosting, I moved off of HMS because each of their PHP servers were configured slightly different and caused a major headache from one client to another. Their support was top notch, but I felt I had to call them for every client due to the server differences.

I now use http://www.rapidvps.com for my servers and so far I absolutely love it, they don’t provide any CF packages, but its VPS so I install my own CFML engine of choice.

My experience with HMS has been very similar…great support, but the sites having lots of problems. Fairly similar experience with Crystaltech. I’ve tried both Viviotech and AHPHosting but just not happy with some of the problems with their hosting and uptime. So recently I too have been starting to use KickAssVPS.com for some VPS servers and find they have good uptime and really excellent support. I’m running one customer on Railo now and we’re thrilled with the performance we are getting, but their prices for CF hosting are quite competitive as well.

We (Onlinebase.nl) offer our customers shared CF-hosting on Webstekker (webstekker.nl) servers. They have excellent, professional support and tend to be quick solving issues. Uptime is really good and they’ve even installed the latest version of CF 8.0.1 for me when asked – now that’s service! So this is also an option for all you US-citizens.

Stay away from DailyRazor.com! They accidentally deleted my account… web site was offline for almsot a month. They wouldn’t refund me any money. Refused to allow me to cancel my account. Also tried to auto-renew my account after I’d requested it to be cancelled.

Like so many others here, I’ve had a miserable time with HostMySite. My experience was exactly like @jeffs. Excellent customer service reps that were always willing to resolve my issues. I struggled for over a year with uptime issues and wound up having my site moved 3 different times to “better” servers. The results have always been the same, lots of downtime. HMS has the best of intentions, but that doesn’t amount to much.

I still have one site to move off of HMS and over to one of my VPS instances at VivioTech or Linode (linode.com). I’ve been extremely happy with both VivioTech and Linode (run by a friend of mine) and have had great customer support as well as optimal uptime.

Thank you for all your replies, I really appreciate it. I will give the information on to the client!

I would stay away from KickAssVPS. I’ve been with them since April 2008. I signed up on their site on the 6th (a Sunday) and never heard anything from them (not even an auto-reply), on the 10th I finally got a response saying my VPS is ready. I logged in and they did not setup the extra IP I requested or Plesk (which I paid extra for).

They finally setup the second IP (which I needed for SSL on two different sites) and set up the wrong Plesk license on Monday the 14th.

The service has been inaccessible several times throughout the time I’ve been with them, and I have three e-mails from them for the few times they actually announce a planned outage or maintenance (which is usually just 1-2 hours notice).

I am currently moving to NeoSpire because I have heard great things about them from my friend at TOKYOPOP. They DO have shared Cold Fusion, but it looks like their focus is on dedicated servers.

Ah! I have totally different experience with hostingatoz.com what Tuttle is having with them. I am on their Nile Server and it is working fine for me. I have not seen any noticeable issues except about 3 months ago where there were some hardware issues (as they mentioned in announcement). Apart from this I am really happy with them.

We have using Coldfusion Hosting from efree2net.com more than 5 years.
Their Coldfusion services are great, support sandbox security with cffile and cfdirectory.

Adam Thor  on July 16th, 2009

I’ve been using http://ultimahosts.net/Windows/VPS/ Windows 2008 VPS for some time. They don’t offer shared CF but it can easily be loaded on the VPS. Uptime and performance outstanding.
