What Are Your Tech New Year Resolutions?

Every year I try to do a Tech New Year Resolutions. These are the things that I want to do in my professional life.

Learn Flex 3
This was a goal for last year but didn’t seem to pan out. Now that AIR and Flex are getting a lot of momentum it is a good time to go ahead and start learning them. I have some great ideas for AIR apps and need to get to learning flex. I won a Flex 3 getting started book at the Nashville ColdFusion User Group Christmas Party so that has got me started over the vacation.

Learn Action Script 3
This kind of goes hand in hand with the Flex 3 but I really want to get a grasp on AS3 so my Flex apps can be really dynamic. I picked up one of the Action Script 3 Classroom in a Book at the Christmas party so I will be using that

Learn how to create WordPress Templates
Wordpress is such an awesome publishing platform that I want to really dive in to the templating and create custom templates.

Blog More
I posted almost 122 posts this year which is pretty good given that I haven’t blogged much the last part of the year. My goal is 150 this year so we shall see what we have. I also picked up a free copy of Blogo courtesy of BrainJuice so that will hopefully inspire me.

So what are your tech New Year resolutions?

Finish and promote CacheBox v.1. http://cachebox.riaforge.org

Complete at least one new plugin for the onTap framework (preferably a CMS)

Complete the documentation for the DataFaucet PersistenceService and publish the next version DataFaucet 1.1

Finish the v.1. Release of the onTopic forum plugin for the onTap framework (a twitter-esque approach to forums) http://ontopic.riaforge.org

That’s about 2-months of work I think… hopefully I’ll also find the time to learn more about TDD.

Thanks Isaac! I look forward to the forum project myself.

My goals:

- Finish new versions of some customer apps that have been lingering.

- Update my knowledge of Java. This has hampered me with some server-side coding I’ve been trying to tear through over the last few months.

- Grow my blog audience. This should be through a combination of better and more posts.

- Grow usergroup to 50 members attendending per month. I set a goal of 30 this last year, and I just squeeked by.

- Grow my consulting again. More customers == busier == more money, i hope :)

1. understand rails, start using ruby, rails
2. move most dev to ubuntu
3. build something useful with functional languages

@radekg yeah it’s a great time to get into Rails. Especially with MeRB being rolled in to Rails 3.

@nick yeah we need to grow our usergroup. I started as co-manager at Nashville CFUG and we average about 10 guys a meeting. We know the audience is out there because we drew in 70 when Ben Forta showed up for the CF8 tour.

Totally onboard with your AS3 goal. Learning Flex without chewing up and swallowing the AS3 layer is like learning HTML without Javascript (ok, not exactly) or getting your latte without whipped cream.

My techgoals:
1. Master Actionscript 3
2. Find something nice to say about OS X
3. Skin Vista
4. Become a publicly-renown ColdFusion figure famous for releasing the single most productivity-enhancing framework and reference book in the history of ColdFusion.

1.) Get a personal VPS account for playing around with tech I don’t get to use at work.

2.) Learn both Coldbox and CakePHP.

3.) Read more books!

4.) Join a user group.

5.) Resurrect my blog…

I too would like to look into FLEX. Also, I was hoping to get a Mac Mini and look into iPhone Application development as well. Fingers crossed!

My resolutions are simple:
-I resolve to var all my function variables. (sometimes i miss a couple)

-I resolve to queryparam my sql vars (a guy can get lazy)

I resolve to comment my code better (arg… isn’t it all self explanitory anyway?)

I resolve to resolve the previously stated resolutions.

Ben: Or you could just install OS X on your current system.
