Why Church – Part II

Why Church? – Man On The Street PT1 from J.J. Merrick on Vimeo.
This was created for our Rolling Hills Community Church in Franklin, TN. They needed a man on the street video that asked “Do you go to church”. My wonderful wife helped me out with the interviewing and this was shot in downtown Nashville. All of the graphics were done in After Effects and final edit was done in Final Cut Pro.
So this blog is changing a little. When I first started it I was a ColdFusion programmer that loved what he did and loved writing about it. As I approached 30 this past summer I started to feel like there was a void in my career path that needed to be evaluated. I started thinking about what I loved to do and I kept coming back to media. I started as a designer many years ago and fell in to ColdFusion as a natural progression of making my websites do things. Before I knew it I had a full time job doing it and the next 10 years of my life flew by.
I got married, had 3 kids (with another on the way) and dev work was stable and kept coming. It was easy.
This summer I started to get back in to video, photography, and motion graphics. It is what I love to do and it is starting to go to the forefront of my career.
I’ve started to do more “production” as opposed to just straight web development and I am LOVING IT! I get to create and manage projects but don’t have to code day in and day out and be a total nerd. I get to play around with other technologies like RoR and PHP, Wordpress and Joomla!, AfterEffects and Final Cut Pro, it has been a whirlwind!
Needless to say you are going to see a lot of things posted to this blog that may not be what you originally signed up for and that is ok. I still will post things on technology since that will never leave me but it won’t be strict ColdFusion.
So here we go to the second act of my life!
Fun couple on a rainy day. We were bound and determined to get this shoot in and rain be damned we did it!

I got a text the other day from my Sister-In-Law who is also a photographer out in Maryland. She had remembered that I took a picture of my daughter waiting for the bus and recommended that I enter it in the latest DPS weekly assignment titled “School Days”. I entered and low and behold I won!
I found out that you don’t actually win anything but at least I can say I won something! :-)
No special occasion, just wanted new pictures. Took these at a new location though so that was fun.

I got to do a photoshoot for someone that is very special to our family. Brooke watches our kids and is like a second mother to them. When she asked me to do pictures I was more then happy to oblige. BTW these are not engagement photos… they are “Friendship” photos… so don’t get any idea… yet! :-)

This shoot was for a web client of mine, Kelly Dale. We decided that she needed a little more edgier pictures for her website…

Fun photo-shoot with some old friends. The daughter did not want her picture taken so I slapped on the telephoto and said “just look at the flowers and play” :-)
